Silhouette artwork works best with clear side-profile photos that show strong contrast and distinct outlines—think simple backgrounds and good lighting that clearly defines the subject’s profile. Watercolor and sketch styles allow for more flexibility and work beautifully with landscapes or architectural photos that have depth, color, and a mix of light and shadow. Watercolors are best suited for outdoor scenes, while sketches shine with architectural subjects.

Photograph your subject during the daytime when possible, using a bright, clean background. Natural light helps create a clean, defined outline.
Have your subject face left or right so only one side of the face is visible. Photograph them at eye level, making sure the entire head is captured in the frame.
Relaxed facial expressions tend to translate best in silhouettes, though gentle smiles can also work. Choose the look you love most.
For longer hair, pulling it up—such as a ponytail, braid, or loose bun—helps define the profile and adds character to the silhouette.
If ordering silhouettes for multiple people, please submit individual photos for each subject unless ordering a full-body or group silhouette.
For full-body artwork, photograph subjects standing or walking toward or away from the camera. This works especially well for siblings.
For infants, photos taken while they are sleeping often work best. Hold the camera directly above their face and capture a clear side profile.
Photos taken with a smartphone are perfectly fine—just be sure the image is clear, well-lit, and in focus.
If submitting multiple photos, please rename each file with the person’s name if text labels are requested.
